Balance at address is critical. This is a simple way to see if you have the proper balance.
If you're too far forward on your toes, if someone pushes you from behind, you'll easily lurch forward (bottom left). Conversely, if you're too far back on your heels, if someone pushes you from the front, you'll fall backwards (bottom right).
If you're on the balls of your feet, however, you can pass the push test (right). If, when you take your stance, you can lift your toes without moving backward and lift your heels without falling forward, you've found the bottom of your feet.
There's no need to go through some complicated checklist when you build your stance. Just find your balance.
Rob Akins is the Director of Instruction for Spring Creek Ranch in Collierville, Tenn. Charlie King is the director of instruction at the Reynolds Plantation in Greensboro, Ga.
